The Norfolk Tides (89-58, 41-32) have known since late June they were headed to the postseason after winning the first-half title in the International League. The Tides play their penultimate game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Buffalo's Sahlen Field, taking on the Buffalo Bisons (75-71, 41-30). The teams have split the first four games of the series, with the Bisons taking the last two. While Buffalo hasn't announced a starter for Friday, Norfolk gives the ball to 23-year-old left-hander Cade Povich. Promoted from Double-A Bowie in late July, Povich is 2-3 in nine starts for the Tides, posting a 5.13 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 40.1 innings while striking out 47 batters.

Toronto's top prospect, left-hander Ricky Tiedemann, had a strong Triple-A debut for Buffalo on Friday night, working four innings and striking out six, allowing an unearned run and two hits. The 21-year-old was a third-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2021. Addison Barger drove in three runs for the Bisons and Rafael Lantigua had his third straight three-hit game.
Norfolk got a run in the top of the first when Buffalo catcher Max McDowell threw wildly on a stolen base attempt and then dropped the throw home. Maverick Handley added an RBI single in the fifth.
The Tides will host the Durham Bulls in the best-of-three IL Championship Series, which opens Tuesday at Norfolk's Harbor Park. The winner advances to the Triple-A National Championship Game against the winner of the Pacific Coast League on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas.
